Uphoff's artistic development dates back to 1907, when he was supported by art patron Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen in Westphalia and had modern art before his eyes in his museum Folkwang, founded in 1902. At the same time, Uphoff became a member of the "Folkwang-Kreis" in Hagen, amicably supported by Christian Rohlfs.
